Valve to add microtransactions to Steam

"As the company itself puts it, "Want to offer your customers a scabbard for their sword? New tires? The latest in night vision goggles? Now you can!" It seems that while we were all up in arms about the added Mac client for Steam and Epic Games giving away its SDK to Steam devs, Valve also slipped out software developer support for microtransactions, not to mention a 100 fold increase in cloud storage limits (from 1MB to 100MB per game).

Joystiq's PC-centric sister site Big Download noticed the additions in a PDF that Valve recently released on an overview site, detailing the changes coming to the Steam digital distribution client in 2010. As for the microtransaction update, Valve promises users the ability to "buy and instantly use the items they want –- all without leaving the game," perhaps opening up the gate to free-to-play/microtransaction-based games on the service. And, maybe more interestingly, leaving open the possibility of free-to-play games based in the Source and Unreal game engines. "

The Swiss National Council has passed two resolutions dealing with violent video games. One that would make it illegal to sell 16 and 18 rated games to minors, another that would completely ban games "in which cruel acts of violence against humans and humanlike creatures for the game success"

This doesn't have to do with gaming per se, but the crossover to gaming for the disabled is self-evident, I think. Some people got together to create eye-tracking hardware & software so a graffiti artist can continue to create. Here's the kicker: the hardware cost comes out to be only about $50.

The Video Game BAFTAs are now finished (well just winding up now with the Fellowship Award to Miyamato)

It looks like there are a handful of people experiencing freezes in god of war 3. I know I'm one of them and it's a real pain. (80GB fat PS3)

Without spoiling anything (unless you're the kind of person that reads the back of DVD cases to know that a movie contains cannon fire and an explosion) the game froze 3x in a row for me at the exact same spot when you first shimmy across a chain.

Since then (I deleted all my GOW3 saves) it's frozen once in the grunt fight directly before this spot and once directly after while reading a scrap of paper on the ground.

Other people seem to be having other areas of the game that trigger freezes and some have no trouble at all. But this needs to be addressed with a patch or something soon, as I don't need a $60 coaster. Reply

@Fecal-Lord: I've seen lots complaining about this. God of War 3 is too big a release to imagine Sony is going to sit on this issue. I'd expect a patch ASAP.

Well I somehow made it past all the chain section freezes to the next save point, about 12 freezes later.

Now I've found a new spot at the start of Hades Palace that has triggered about 7 freezes so far. Most of them while fighting the flying enemies down below or opening the pair of chests on the second floor. I also just got two while fighting the enemies on the second floor after jamming the wheel.

Guardian gives a look into why voice acting in games can be pretty bad.
Both due to many actors being experienced with linear tv and film work, as well as the game creators themselves being inexperienced at working with VA's.
And the daunting amount of lines as well (highlights SWTORs '40 novels' of dialogue)
